From what I've been told, it's been a lot more frequent lately.

[He pauses and furrows his brows, working his memory past the alcohol.]

There was a battle two weeks ago, and then one about a month or so before that. Not every day, thank goodness. Just enough to not let us get too comfortable.

[Finally, he gives her a once-over and frowns in concern.]

You don't know much about fighting battles, do you?

[Fiona finally lights her cigarette.] I sell paper cups for a living.

[Welp...]

Oh dear.

And what ability did they give you?

I dunno. Wasn't really high on my list of priorities when I ended up here. What d'you got?

Healing. It's not very strong yet, but I make do.

[He gives her a slightly more intense look than he would if he were fully sober and if his emotions weren't all over the place even before he drank.]

You need to be careful, alright? Take one of the fighting classes, or find a way to help away from the main fighting. Something.

I'm not gonna be stupid. [Too much is riding on her life for her to let herself die.] Healing sounds nice, though. [She thinks she could deal with having that.]

Well, that's what we all say! Even I pulled a stupid move and got myself killed recently.

[He's still angry with himself about that. Especially since it cost him days he could have been with Charley before she disappeared.]

It is nice, but at first it cannot heal mortal wounds. I know. I tried.

Being able to fix anything sounds like it'd be nice. [She won't comment on the whole dying thing. It's not an outcome she can consider.]

It will take a lot of work for you to be able to heal anything. And even then, healing yourself doesn't really work very well.

I suppose if you wanted to, you could attend one of the fighting classes, if only to learn how to defend yourself when the giants come again to attack the city.

[Fiona shrugs. She knows she's a hard worker, but she's not about to brag about it.] I dunno what kind of kung fu I could learn that'd be useful against giants.

Don't sell yourself short.

[He pauses for a moment to appreciate such a horrible turn of phase. Short. Ha. Because giants are so much taller and...anyway...]

Giants also tend to be slow, but I'm sure whatever classes they have here are tailored around what we have to deal with in Asgard.

I can't say for certain. I'm no fighter, so I haven't bothered to look in on the classes. Maybe ask Arthur.

Oh, so I should take self-defense classes against supermarket mascots, but not you? [But she's smiling, fiddling with her cigarette. This guy's actually pretty decent; she kinda feels bad for leaving him that note. Or, well. Not for leaving it, but she could've been nicer about it. What is it about winding up in an alternate dimension that makes you assume the worst of the guy next door?]

[...Being from the East Side, mostly.]

[He gives her a feigned haughty look, smirking.]

I already know how to fight.

[Then he drops the smug expression and shrugs.]

It's just not who I am. I'm about saving lives. I don't like to fight.

[She laughs. She wasn't expecting him to be funny.] Hey, do I look like I'm real big on fighting, either? Maybe I'll coupon the giants to death.

[It's good to hear someone laugh. He grins a bit wider and bites into a second cracker.]

Everyone has something they can do. If anything, maybe you can go around and make sure the children are out of harm's way.

Hey, don't knock couponing. [She crosses her arms, but she's still smiling.] Yeah, that's me, Nanny Gallagher. There that many children around here?

You could give the giants a vicious paper cut!

[Right now, he's really, really glad he went into the bathroom and found the note before going to bed tonight. After the horrible brooding, a bit of a cry on the TARDIS' shoulder and a bit of a drink...or two...with River to drown his sorrows, a good laugh before bed is certain what is needed.]

Unfortunately, yes, there are a few. Why the gods chose to bring children into a war is beyond me, but there you have it. No babies, thank goodness. I think Alice is the youngest at seven years old. Then there's Hugo and Rue who are twelve and thirteen respectfully. Ellie is fourteen, and Mordred is...eleven. I think.

Those are the only children I can think of. I try to keep an eye on them in the network, but I'm usually too busy in the battles to keep track of all of them.

That's the only kind of paper cut to give.

Yeah, I met Ellie, she's a good kid. Wait, wait, hey, I thought you said you weren't a fighter. [She waves her finger in front of her.]

[He lifts his eyebrows at her and gives her a fake stern look.]

I'm a healer. I'm usually in the middle of the battle trying to patch people up.

[He gets a stern look right back.]

Are you sure you're careful? Maybe you should take some fighting classes.

[HMPH!]

I know how to fight, Fiona. You should see me with a sword. I'm pretty good, I'd say.

And I'm always careful. Well, almost always.

Yeah, real reassuring. I'll take some classes if you take some. [Because clearly that's a boast she's not going to regret.]

[He leans in and grins broadly.]

Miss Gallagher, I believe we have a deal.

[She holds out her hand for a shake, to seal the deal.] You got it.

[He takes the hand in his own and shakes it with a nod.] Good!
